Stock icons. How would you use them?

April 15, 2008 4AM

I've written about some free icon web sites in the past but never really touched on other stock icon sources. A couple of sites I mentioned in my earlier articleIconBuffet and IconShock—also offer stock (not free) options, but what of those sites that focus on stock icons (whilst still offering free samples of their goods)? I decided to look into some of those sites.

There are plenty of sites out there offering stock icons. Too many for me to list. One place you can get a good list is Icons Review. They have an impressive list and they've rated the sites as well. I had a look at some of the sites that received the highest rating and found some seriously useful icon sources. Then I got to thinking. What could I use some of these icons on? Something to show their usefulness while still allowing me to add something to my web site for my visitors. And it hit me. WinStep Xtreme!

So I am going to create a new desktop theme for WinStep Xtreme that uses stock icons for the modules. And of the highly rated stock icon sites mentioned at Icons Review I've chosen IconGalore. IconGalore provide free samples of their icons which has already allowed me to see what kind of files I can expect in an icon set. Each icon is provided in various ICO, GIF and PNG formats in sizes from 16 pixels to 64 pixels. Their range is impressive too which should allow me to add an individual icon to each of the desktop modules that WinStep Xtreme offers. And most importantly, the icons themselves look cool and professional. This should be a decent looking desktop theme Smily

Stay tuned for updates as the theme progresses Smily
