Best stock photo sites
November 28, 2007 3AM
If you don't have the time, budget or skill to create all of your graphics yourself, stock photography web sites can be a real life saver. I've used a few stock images professionally and personally that I've found from varied sources. So I thought — as I've done in several other journal posts — I would share links to my favourites
- Stockvault — Free stock photos for personal, educational and non-profit projects. Clearly categorised and easy to navigate and download from.
- morgueFile — Free stock photos that can be used for personal and commercial projects. A good point that they cover on their FAQ page is that you are still responsible for the content of the photograph (important if people or property are depicted in the image you want to use).
- FreePhotosBank — Free photos for web sites, books, magazines etc. Their terms and conditions state you need to credit the photographer for their work in whatever you create using their photographs. You are also encouraged to contact individual photographers to request permission to use their photographs in your projects.
- Image*After — Another stock photo site offering free photogaphs for both personal and commercial use. The site has a handy 'Clippings' section which stores images you want to view later as a group.
- stock.xchng — One of the coolest free stock photo sites. You can get images that are free for personal and commercial use here. Images can have different terms and conditions depending on what the photogapher selected when they uploaded their image. Some great images.
- Stockxpert — The images on this site are not free, but for better quality photographs you can get some very cheap images here. Brought to you by the people that bring you stock.xchng.
- iStockphoto — Like Stockxpert, the images on this site are not free (although each week they do provide free photographs, vector images and videos to site members). But the photographs and vector images on this site can be truely amazing for the prices they sell for. At the time of writing, they have over two million files to search through

There you have it. Know of other stock photography web sites? Let me know. I'll gladly add to the list. Enjoy the free photographs
